DON’T LET YOUR PARENTS INVESTMENT BECOME A COLOSSAL WASTE

DON’T LET YOUR PARENTS INVESTMENT BECOME A COLOSSAL WASTE- IAUE VC TELLS FRESH STUDENTS

Image

Fresh students of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education have been advised to take their studies seriously and graduate within the stipulated time so that the investment on them by their parents will not become a colossal waste.

Acting Vice Chancellor, Ignatius Ajuru University of Education Professor Rosemund Dienye Green-Osahogulu gave the advice while declaring open the one week orientation programme for fresh students of the 2012/2013 academic session.

Represented by the Registrar of the institution Barrister Ikem Adiele, Prof. R. D. G Osahogulu congratulated the students for scaling through Jamb and urged them to take the issues of morals and discipline seriously and to ask questions on any issues not clear to them.

The Acting VC noted that becoming a member of banned organizations is an abomination in IAUE, stressing that defaulters will be treated like common criminals if found guilty.  She also told them to attend classes regularly and take permission from their lecturers if they can’t attend for any reason as seventy five percent class attendance is mandatory and a yardstick for sitting for any examination.  Cheating and sorting she added cannot guarantee their success in IAUE neither will earning marks by sexual submission to lecturers by female students.

Sexual harassment she further noted is also not allowed as all machinery will be put in place to protect any female students who reports such harassment. She assured the students that they will enjoy their stay in IAUE if they obey all the rules and regulations and respect constituted authorities as nothing works in a lawless environment

Making a presentation on “Academic Programmes and the Distribution of Academic Departments in the three Campuses of the University”, the Deputy Vice Chancellor Prof. Lawanson Briggs represented by the Dean of Faculty of Science Dr. Jane Onwugbuta Enyi appreciated the students for choosing IAUE and pointed out that any student whose academic performance falls below expectation at the end of one year of study shall be placed on probation while students whose cumulative grade point average is beyond redemption may be asked to withdraw for academic reason.

Professor Briggs congratulated the students and wished them desirable victory of intelligently completing their performances in flying colors.

Speaking on “University Regulations and Requirement for Graduating within stipulated time,” the Registrar of IAUE Barrister Ikem Adiele observed that there can be no place better organized than the university system anchored on rule of law and moral rectitude.

The Director Information and Communications Technology (ICT) centre Prof. Dele Osahogulu who informed the students of the different units in ICT advised them to make use of services available and visit the university website as their primary assignment here is to acquire knowledge.

Also speaking on “Health issues and University Environment, the Director Health Services, Dr. Ibidaba Alabere remarked that the university has put in place health facilities to take care of their health needs and ensure that they are physically and mentally fit for their studies. He discouraged them from consuming alcohol pointing out that it could be detrimental to their well being. He wished them well in their pursuit of academic qualification and encouraged them to use the health facilities in all the three campuses.

The university librarian Dr. Boma Obi represented by a Library Staff, Mrs. Nnenda Tom George while speaking on “The Use of the University Library” advised the students to make the library their best friend as it is the heart beat of the Institution.  She also gave them guidelines on how to use the library and encouraged them to draw up a yardstick on how to achieve their set goals and read extensively as no knowledge is a waste.

The chief security officer Mr. Nwibari Nwadua while making a presentation on “Security Issues on Campuses and Services of the Security Unit” gave the students some security tips and urged them to be security conscious at all times.

The President of Student Union Government Mr. Samuel Elechi Amadi who briefed the students on “Student Unionism and Membership of Student Clubs, Associations and Societies on Campus” pointed out that they are expected to identify with associations, and clubs that have legal approval, make the right choice and flee from all manner of social vices and cultism so as not to tarnish the name of their parents who are spending their hard earned resources to ensure that they become better citizens.

In her vote of thanks the Dean Student Affairs, Dr. Veronica Okogbaa reiterated the essence of the orientation programme and enjoined the students to avail themselves of her office, ask their lecturers, Deans, Heads of Department, question or get advise and clarifications on issues they are not clear about.

The programme afforded the students opportunity to ask questions on burning issues, to which answers were given.

Mr. Deji Fakuade of cinfores group gave a presentation on the “e registration” procedure. The students were later entertained with a beautiful cultural dance performance by the music department.

TO ALL FRESH UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS

                            IGNATIUS AJURU UNIVERSITY OF EDUCATION

                                          RUMUOLUMENI, P.M.B.5047

                                                      PORT HARCOURT

Office of the Dean Student Affairs

I congratulate you all for being among the few that passed through the “eye of the needle” of JAMB this year. It is a privilege.

You are here for an Orientation program. What is Orientation? It is a training or information that is given before starting a new job or course. Part of its aim is to help you understand your new environment quickly so you can settle down to business immediately and with fewer difficulties or mistakes. Therefore take the exercise seriously and learn everything you can. Get to know the places you will be visiting regularly during the course of your study here:

-the library

-the health centre

-the hostels

-the bursary department etc

Most important place is your department; get to meet your Dean, HOD, Faculty officers and Lecturers. Be professional and know the persons by name:

Prof so and so, Dr or Mr. etc not Aunty, Uncle or Mummy so and so which is not typical of an academic environment. Choose your friends well; remember the adage “show me your friends and I will tell you who you are” holds true all the time. Are you confused about what Associations, Clubs or Unions to join? Check with the Student Affairs Department for clarification (you will find the list of clubs/unions, their aims and membership list as a guide).

Are any persons bothering you already to join their clubs? Be careful of such persons. It is your life and you should have a choice what you do with it. Do not allow any persons force you into anything.

I wish you a good stay and success in this institution. Strive hard to achieve excellence right from this beginning. Be focused on the reason you came and good success will certainly be yours. Cheers.
